KUCHING, Nov 4: Rural communities in Gedong are set to benefit from improved road connectivity following the completion of the RM24.5 million Kampung Tegelam-Kampung Sungai Alit road construction project.
The 8.708-kilometre two-lane, two-way road provides improved access between Kampung Tegelam, Kampung Sungai Tegelam and Kampung Sungai Alit, making daily travel more convenient and strengthening connections between the villages.
According to a report by the Sarawak Public Communications Unit (UKAS), the project comprises a 5.523-kilometre main road built to JKR R2 standards and a 3.185-kilometre branch road built to JKR R1 standards, including access routes to Kampung Sungai Alit and Kampung Tegelam.
Executed under the Infrastructure Development Subcommittee of the Samarahan Integrated Regional Development Agency (IRSDA), the project commenced on January 20, 2023, and was initially scheduled for completion on September 19, 2024, before its completion date was revised to November 2, 2026.
The scope of works included the installation of culverts, construction of drains and road junctions, road furniture and markings, as well as soil treatment and slope protection measures to ensure road stability and user safety.
Following its completion, a site visit was conducted on Tuesday, attended by IRSDA Deputy Special Administrative Officer Jerina Gapor, and representatives from Samarahan Public Works Department (JKR), Kumpulan Satu Sdn Bhd, and Borneo Assets Sdn Bhd.
The completed road marks another step towards improving rural accessibility in Gedong, providing residents with better connections between neighbouring villages while supporting the government’s broader efforts to strengthen rural infrastructure and promote socioeconomic development. – DayakDaily
