“Additionally, guide embankments will be constructed along six kilometres on each side of the channel, totalling 12 kilometres, to prevent sediment from re-entering the dredged area.

“The dredged material will be used to improve the surrounding area by placing it along both sides of the embankment,” he explained, according to a news report by Sarawak Public Communications Unit (Ukas).

He made these remarks at the ground-breaking ceremony for the Batang Baram Delta Project, which was officiated at by Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg today.

Uggah, who is also Minister of Infrastructure and Port Development, added that the construction of the embankments will extend three kilometres from the water with a depth of approximately 25 metres.

“This depth will make it suitable for developing a deep-water port in Kuala Baram, meeting the draft requirements for all types of vessels,” he said.

He emphasised that the project is expected to significantly benefit the shipping and trading sectors in Kuala Baram and enhance navigation safety in the area.
