MIRI, Oct 3: RM200,000 has been allocated under the Rural Transformation Project (RTP) to upgrade and improve the drainage system along Jalan Lianthus, Kampung Luak, to reduce the risk of flooding that frequently affects residents.

In a Sarawak Public Communication Unit (Ukas) report, Sarawak Deputy Minister for Tourism, Creative Industry, and Performing Arts and Piasau assemblyman Datuk Sebastian Ting Chiew Yew said the allocation would be used to improve the efficiency of the existing drainage system in the residential area along Lorong Lianthus.

“The works are expected to improve the efficiency of the existing drainage system while reducing water stagnation and the risk of flooding, especially during heavy rain,” he said during a visit to the area on Thursday (Oct 1).

According to Ting, a long-term solution would be to construct a new drainage system that would channel water from frequently flooded areas directly to the river mouth before it flows into the sea.

He said the approach could reduce reliance on the existing drainage system, thereby easing drainage capacity constraints and reducing the risk of flooding occurring more rapidly.
