RM17.9 mln reconstruction of SK Datuk Bandar Debak begins, set for completion in two years

KUCHING, March 31: The reconstruction of SK Datuk Bandar Debak, a RM17.9 million project under the federal government’s Dilapidated Schools Programme, has officially commenced and is scheduled for completion within two years.

According to a post by the Public Works Department (JKR) Sarawak, the project began in February 2026 and reflects a continued commitment to upgrading rural school infrastructure and enhancing the quality of education delivery across the State.

The groundbreaking ceremony was officiated by Minister of Education, Innovation and Talent Development Dato Sri Roland Sagah Wee Inn on Monday (March 30), underscoring the State government’s focus on strengthening educational development in rural areas.

JKR Sarawak said the project scope includes the construction of new academic and administrative blocks, a preschool facility, a surau, and teachers’ quarters, as well as the provision of modern infrastructure aimed at creating a more conducive learning environment.

The development is designed to improve teaching and learning conditions by providing a safer, more comfortable and well-equipped environment for students and educators.

It added that the initiative would also support early childhood education access, enhance the welfare of the school community, and help bridge the development gap between urban and rural schools.

Among those present at the ceremony were Deputy Minister of Community Wellbeing Development Datuk Ricky @ Mohamad Razi Sitam, Deputy Minister of Talent Development Datuk Francis Harden Hollis, Betong member of Parliament Dato Dr Richard Rapu @ Aman Begri, MEITD permanent secretary Datu Adana Jed, as well as representatives from JKR Sarawak and the State Education Department.

JKR Sarawak emphasised that the project reflects close collaboration between the State and federal governments in ensuring equitable access to quality education, while nurturing a future generation that is capable and competitive. — DayakDaily
