KUCHING, Oct 12: Sarawak will spend RM144 million to upgrade 11 key sports facilities ahead of the SEA Games 2027, with all venues targeted to be competition-ready by mid-2027 as the State prepares to host 18 of the regional sporting event’s 38 sports, with Kuching serving as the central hub for the event.
When tabling the Supply Bill (2027), 2026, or Sarawak Budget 2027, at the Sarawak Legislative Assembly (DUS) today, Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said the State government would also set aside an initial RM120 million for event organisation in 2027.
“The SEA Games is expected to welcome over 3,000 athletes, 1,700 technical personnel, 4,000 volunteers, and 5,500 officials, making it a celebration of sport, culture, and regional unity,” he said.
The sports facilities earmarked for upgrading include Sarawak Stadium, Sarawak Indoor Stadium, Lawn Bowl Arena, Wushu Training Centre, Sarawak Lawn Tennis Centre, Sarawak Shooting Range, Sarawak Squash Centre, Pandelela Rinong Aquatic Centre, Sarawak Archery Centre, and Sarawak Petanque Centre.
The investment is also expected to strengthen Sarawak’s capacity to host future international sporting events, including the Islamic Solidarity Games in 2029.
Beyond major competitions, the State government will continue investing in grassroots sports and community participation.
The State has allocated RM5 million for Sukan Sarawak (SUKSAR) 2027, while RM1.2 million will go to Sarawak X-Tive 2027, which aims to bring sports closer to communities across the districts and reach 120,000 participants.
Another RM21 million will support sports and recreational facilities across Sarawak’s divisions, giving residents more opportunities to participate in sports, develop their talents, and lead healthier, more active lives. — DayakDaily
