KAPIT, Sept 4: A new secondary school worth over RM100 million will be built in Kapit with the construction of Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan (SMK) Bukit Goram, slated for completion by 2030.
According to a Sarawak Public Communication Unit (Ukas) news report, the project, approved under the 12th Malaysia Plan (5th Rolling Plan), is expected to commence in 2026 or 2027 and take three years to complete.
A site inspection was carried out on Wednesday (Sept 3) by Deputy Minister for Education, Innovation and Talent Development Datuk Dr Annuar Rapaee together with Deputy Minister in the Premier’s Department (Law and Native Customs) and Bukit Goram assemblyman, Datuk Jefferson Jamit Unyat.
The project scope includes an administration block, an academic block with 36 classrooms, a special education block (PPKI) with five classrooms, a canteen, a school hall, and other supporting facilities.
“The school would not only expand the number of institutions in Kapit but also provide students with a more conducive learning environment,” Dr Annuar said.
Jefferson described the development as a reflection of the government’s commitment to strengthening rural education infrastructure, in line with the Sarawak’s Post-Covid Development Strategy (PCDS) 2030.
Later in the day, both deputy ministers also visited the rehabilitation project of Sekolah Kebangsaan (SK) Kampong Baru, which had previously been categorised as a sick project.
The school building is scheduled to be handed over to the Sarawak Education Department by mid-December, paving the way for SK Kampong Baru to reopen for the January 2026 school session.
For the past six years, its students and teachers have been temporarily accommodated at SK Kapit. — DayakDaily
