SERIAN, April 8: The RM1.9 billion Serian–Gedong–Samarahan dual carriageway project, which includes provisions for future infrastructure such as an Autonomous Rapid Transit (ART) route, is currently progressing ahead of schedule.

Forming part of the second main state road network connecting Samarahan to Tanjung Embang, the project is set to transform regional connectivity while supporting long-term economic growth.

In a Sarawak Public Communication Unit (Ukas) news, Deputy Minister for Infrastructure and Port Development Datuk Ir Aidel Lariwoo said the project not only increases road capacity but is designed as a modern mobility corridor to meet future demand.

“The project entails a dual carriageway with a dedicated bicycle track, alongside utility corridors on both sides and provisions for an ART route,” he said during a working visit to the site on Tuesday (April 7).

Package 1A, spanning 9.72 kilometres from Simpang Rayang to Simpang Tanah Puteh, upgrades the existing road from a two-lane R3 to a four-lane R5 standard. The development also includes a 40-metre reinforced concrete bridge and energy-efficient street lighting, enhancing both safety and sustainability.

Once land acquisition matters are fully resolved, the contractor will gain complete access to the site, accelerating implementation.

“The project has recorded a physical completion rate of 7.77 per cent, surpassing the scheduled 3.46 per cent, while financial progress stands at 11.45 per cent against a planned 7.85 per cent.

“Compensation has already been disbursed to 63 landowners, with the remaining cases expected to be resolved soon,” Aidel said.

The approximately 18km dual carriageway connecting Serian and Gedong is projected to reduce travel time to just 18 minutes at speeds of up to 120km/h.

Beyond improved connectivity, Aidel emphasised that the project is expected to act as a catalyst for rural development, supporting the government’s vision to establish Gedong as an agricultural hub and benefiting over 14,000 residents in surrounding areas including Kampung Rayang, Munggu Kopi, Tanah Puteh, and Sebemban.

“In addition to easing travel, the dual carriageway will energise local economic activities, create business opportunities, and lower transportation costs for the community,” he added.

Comprising five construction packages, the project promises to serve as an important alternative route for road users, providing smoother journeys while contributing to Sarawak’s comprehensive regional development. — DayakDaily
