KUCHING, Nov 7: A total of 41 development projects worth RM1.5 billion have been approved under the Upper Rajang Development Agency (URDA), covering road and bridge construction, water supply systems, the Kapit Master Plan, and development of URDA’s new office.

Speaking at the Majlis Merarau Bersama Komuniti held at the Kapit Civic Centre today, Works Minister and Kapit MP Dato Sri Alexander Nanta Linggi said these projects underline the government’s strong commitment to transforming the socio-economic landscape of the Upper Rajang region and ensuring that the people in the interior enjoy the same development opportunities as those in urban centres.

The event was graced by Premier of Sarawak Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg, who also officiated the symbolic launch of URDA’s new office.

Nanta emphasised that the Premier’s presence was highly meaningful for the Regional Corridor Development Authority (Recoda) and URDA, as it reflected the Sarawak government’s strong support for strengthening development administration in the interior regions.

“Since its establishment, URDA has served as a major catalyst for infrastructure and socio-economic development in Kapit, Song, Bukit Mabong, Baleh, and Belaga.

“With the new URDA office now operational, I am confident that our officers will be able to serve the people more efficiently and closely,” he said in a post shared on his social media.

Beyond physical infrastructure, Nanta noted that URDA also focuses on improving rural livelihoods through socio-economic initiatives under the COMMUNITY@SCORE programme, which has carried out 24 programmes and projects to boost local entrepreneurship, agriculture, and small industries.

“These achievements clearly demonstrate the Sarawak government’s continuous commitment to ensuring balanced, inclusive, and sustainable development, in line with the Post-Covid Development Strategy (PCDS) 2030 and the aspiration of ‘Sarawak Maju Makmur’,” he added.

Nanta also expressed his deepest appreciation to the Premier and all stakeholders involved in URDA and Recoda’s initiatives, stressing that their collaboration and shared vision are crucial in advancing the central region’s progress and improving the well-being of its people.

“With strong spirit and teamwork, we will continue to strengthen the development of the central region of Sarawak for the prosperity and benefit of our rakyat,” he said. — DayakDaily
