Riverine travellers urged to take extra precautions as heavy rainfall hits northern Sarawak


KUCHING, Aug 24: River users, ‘penambang’ operators, ship owners, masters, agents, shipping communities and the general public are advise to take extra precaution during the heavy rain which is affecting parts of the State.

The Sarawak Rivers Board controller has issued a notice of caution especially for those carrying out river activities in Northern Sarawak.

“Due to heavy rain that caused overflow in the northern region such as Batang Baram and Sungai Limbang and its tributaries, it is advisable that all vessels, boats and small or long boats plying in the river are to maintain extra look out, reduce speed while approaching or passing kampung area as well as nearby facilities.


“All express boats, passenger boats, small and long boats passengers (sic) are to wear life jackets, reduce speed, switch on navigation or signal lights, and sound fog horn while vessels are on the way,” the statement said.

It added, the co-operation of all parties and communities is very much needed in order to prevent any untoward incidents. — DayakDaily
