KUCHING, July 9: A large natural lake behind Kampung Riih Daso, located just 15 minutes from Serian town off the Serian-Tebedu road, is set to be transformed into a new tourism attraction with support from the Serian District Council (MDS) and the Sarawak government.

According to MDS chairman Dato Peter Minos, the project will be carried out with backing from Bukit Semuja assemblyman John Ilus and government funding, with hopes to commence development by the end of this year pending necessary approvals.

“The lake is huge and beautiful, about half the size of Tasik Biru in Bau. It has two small islands which are suitable for the construction of chalets for tourists,” Minos said in a statement today.

Currently, villagers at Kampung Riih Daso have been rearing fish using traditional traps in the lake, which is also a popular fishing spot for the local community. On their own initiative, they have even constructed a simple access road connecting the lake to the main Serian-Tebedu road.

In response to the community’s efforts, MDS will build a dedicated fishing platform and construct two short access roads to facilitate fishing activities for enthusiasts.

“With more funds in the future, we also plan to build native-style bridges to connect the islands and develop chalets to boost tourism,” Minos added.

The village chief (KK) of Kampung Riih Daso, Mabang Lahi, has expressed strong support and anticipation from the villagers.

“The villagers are excited and anxious, and they are waiting,” Mabang was quoted as saying.

Minos further noted that the council is eager to play its role in developing the area, adding that Serian holds much untapped tourism potential.

He cited Bung Sadong mountain resort at Kampung Taee and the Silabur Caves near Kampung Bunan Gega in Mongkos as other promising destinations in the district.

“We in MDS are happy doing our part to promote local tourism,” he said. — DayakDaily
