BINTULU, June 2: The massive fire that ravaged the 43-door Rumah Ugop Umpin longhouse in Nanga Sigu Pandan near Sebauh today has displaced 325 residents.
No casualties or injuries were reported.
Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) Sarawak stated that no temporary evacuation centre has been opened yet, awaiting the decisions from the district office and Welfare Department.
It has been proposed that the fire victims find refuge at SK Kuala Sigu, situated approximately 300 metres from the longhouse, as they currently lack temporary shelter options.
Meanwhile, the fire has inflicted severe damage to the entire longhouse structure, with the interior suffering extensive destruction.
Bomba Sarawak responded to the emergency at 12:41am today (June 2) and immediately despatched a team of firefighters from Bintulu Station to the scene located approximately 142km away.
Access to the remote longhouse is limited to 4WD vehicles via plantation roads, with the journey estimated to take over three hours.
Firefighters have set up a post-incident one-stop centre to collect information from all the residents affected by the fire.
The cause of the fire and estimated loss incurred are still under investigation. — DayakDaily
