KUCHING, Feb 9: Minister of Tourism, Arts, and Culture Malaysia and Dudong assemblyman Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing has stressed that the appointment of community leaders must strictly adhere to decisions made by legitimate selection committees to ensure fairness, transparency, and acceptance at the grassroots level.
According to him, the appointment system for community leaders is a part of the government’s official administrative mechanism and must be respected by all parties.
“Any appointment letters or letters of support issued without following proper procedures or without going through a valid selection process have been requested to be withdrawn by Sibu Resident Abang Mohamad Porkan to safeguard the integrity and credibility of the system,” he said in a recent statement.
The Bintulu MP also emphasised that the selection of community leaders must be based on voting outcomes and the principle of majority decision, adding that no individual should disregard official decisions for personal or political interests.
“Candidates who failed to secure leadership positions at the longhouse level should not demand the splitting of longhouses or challenge the selection process simply due to dissatisfaction with the results.
“All parties must act with maturity, rationality, and mutual respect to ensure unity and harmony within the community are preserved,” he added.
At the same time, the Bintulu MP reminded newly appointed community leaders to fully understand the responsibilities entrusted to them, stressing that the position is a duty rather than merely a title.
He said those appointed must carry out their roles with commitment, serve the community regardless of background or political affiliation, and avoid holding positions without fulfilling actual responsibilities.
“The welfare of the community must always be the priority, and these positions should not be used for personal gain or political agendas,” he said. — DayakDaily
