KUCHING, Dec 11: The resolution formula for the gas distribution issue between Petroleum Sarawak Berhad (Petros) and Petroliam Nasional Berhad (PETRONAS) will soon be revealed by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.
Speaking to TVS on Tuesday (Dec 10), Premier of Sarawak Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg expressed confidence that the matter can be considered resolved, pending the official announcement.
“This is not actually a major issue; it primarily concerns legal frameworks. PETRONAS operates under the Petroleum Development Act 1974 (PDA), while Sarawak relies on the Oil Mining Ordinance 1958 (OMO). It has been decided that the PDA and OMO can coexist,” he said.
He made the remarks during the Special Post-Budget Sarawak 2025 Interview by TVS yesterday (Dec 10).
Abang Johari also dismissed concerns about significant financial losses for PETRONAS stemming from the gas distribution arrangement.
“Many have exaggerated this into a major issue, with some claiming PETRONAS would lose RM100 billion in profits. Yes, profits might decrease slightly due to the gas distribution arrangement.
“But I believe this matter can be resolved. In fact, a resolution is already in sight, though I cannot disclose the details at this moment. Let the Prime Minister announce the resolution formula. It is settled,” he said.
Abang Johari also affirmed that Sarawak-owned oil and gas company, Petros, will continue collaborating with PETRONAS in the gas industry within the region.
He explained that this is because both Petros and PETRONAS dominate a significant portion of Sarawak’s gas reserves.
According to him, this also means that the revenue from natural resource exploration in Sarawak will be shared, and the previous issues were solely related to legal aspects. — DayakDaily
