KUCHING, March 20: Malaysia’s tourism recovery rate of 77.2 per cent of pre-pandemic levels makes it the second fastest recovering nation in Southeast Asia in 2023.
This is based on a report by travel research firm Outbox Consulting which ranked Cambodia with its recovery rate of 82.5 per cent as first, as quoted by khmertimeskh.com.
Indonesia and Singapore follow with a recovery rate of 71.7 per cent and 71.3 per cent respectively.
Thailand ranked fifth with a recovery rate of 70.4 per cent while Vietnam which registers a recovering rate of 70 per cent placed sixth.
In seventh place is the Philippines which showed a recovery rate of 66 per cent.
Progressive Democratic Party (PDP) deputy president Datuk Henry Harry Jinep who is also Sarawak’s Deputy Minister for Transport (Marine and Riverine) attributed Malaysia’s achievement in tourism to party president Dato Sri Tiong King Sing who is Tourism, Arts and Culture Minister.
“Dato Sri Tiong is doing well and credit must be given when it is due,” Harry said in a WhatsApp message.
He lamented that such good information and statistics are seldom made known in local news but only in overseas publications.
Malaysia received 29 million tourist arrivals in 2023, making it the tourism champion of the region in 2023.
Thailand placed second with 28 million, followed by Singapore with 13.6 million and Vietnam with 12.6 million. — DayakDaily
