KUCHING, Nov 11: The Rembus H2 Plant in Kota Samarahan, set to produce 1,825 tonnes of hydrogen annually, will play a critical role in advancing hydrogen-based transportation in the region.

Minister of Utility and Telecommunication Dato Sri Julaihi Narawi highlighted that the plant, spearheaded by SEDC Energy Sdn Bhd, is expected to serve as the main hydrogen supply and refueling centre for the Kuching Urban Transportation System (KUTS) project.

He noted that the Sarawak Hydrogen Hub, located within the SEDC Petchem Industrial Park (SPIP) in Tanjung Kidurong, Bintulu, is set to partner with two international hydrogen initiatives—the H2Hornbill Project by a Japanese consortium and the H2Hibiscus Project by a Korean consortium.

“Both projects are currently in the front-end engineering design phase.

“These partnerships will facilitate Sarawak’s export of approximately 200,000 tonnes of green hydrogen annually to Japan and South Korea by the year 2028,” he revealed when tabling the Distribution of Gas (Amendment) Bill, 2024 at the Sarawak Legislative Assembly (DUS) sitting here today.

Additionally, 9,000 tonnes of green hydrogen will be allocated for local consumption each year.

Julaihi emphasised that Sarawak has taken proactive steps to diversify its energy portfolio, beginning in 2017 with the development of hydrogen projects, including a pilot trial for hydrogen-powered buses—marking a significant milestone in the state’s transition to clean energy.

“These strategic initiatives underscore Sarawak’s commitment to advancing its hydrogen economy and achieving long-term sustainability goals,” he added. — DayakDaily
