KUCHING, Aug 22: Registrations are now open for the inaugural Kuching Busking Festival, which will be held from Sept 15 to 17.
According to a press release, the festival is supported by the State government and corporate bodies such as Sarawak Energy Berhad and community organisations like the Rotary Club of Kuching Unity City and is modelled on the world-famous Tamworth Country Music Festival.
The festival’s management revealed that it aims to provide a platform for buskers to showcase their talents and provide a stepping stone in their career advancement, further enhancing the vibrance of the State capital and adding an attraction to the tourism calendar.
“It is an opportunity for tourists and locals alike to appreciate the multi-ethic and cultural melting pot of which Sarawak is so richly endowed and blessed,” said the festival music director and renowned award-winning saxophonist, Zaid Ahmad.
The festival’s first two nights will be held at Merdeka Plaza, Carpenter Street, and Main Bazaar areas commencing at 6pm each night; the finale will be held at Merdeka Plaza at 7.30pm.
The festival will be divided into two categories:
- Category A: Singers and musicians
- Category B: Dancers, artists, actors, storytellers, and other artistically related talents
“The top three finalists of each category will receive RM2,000, 1,500, and 1,000, respectively.
“There will also be a cash prize of RM500 for the winner in the People’s Choice category,” said the press release.
It added that busking materials are not to cover matters related to politics, race, religion, and sex. Buskers must also adhere to the locally accepted forms of conduct and dress code, and nudity is strictly forbidden.
Interested buskers such as singers, dancers, speakers, storytellers, artists, and other talents are invited to register with the Festival Managing team, the Creative Umbrella, via https://linktr.ee/kbfest. There will be no registration fees. — DayakDaily
