KUCHING, Nov 4: Kuching South City Council (MBKS) Mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng has clarified that only 2025 parking coupons are refundable for now.
He explained that this was due to the number of parking coupons already sold for 2025, which has led Kuching City Parking Systems Sdn Bhd (KCPS) to prioritise refunds for that batch first.
“It’s very difficult to look back on how many (parking coupons) are circulating in the market. So that’s why they (KCPS) have decided to accept only during this (2025) term (for refunds),” said Wee when met by reporters during the MBKS Deepavali Celebration 2025 today.
He stressed that there must be a cut-off point, revealing that there are still users holding on to large quantities of coupons dating back as far as 2019, many of which remain unused.
“We will try and see what we can do to resolve it,” he said.
Wee reiterated that notices were issued three months prior to inform the public about the discontinuation of parking coupon usage, so users could either utilise their remaining coupons or refrain from further purchases.
“Let’s settle this year first, and then we’ll see how much further we can assist them (public),” he added.
He also noted that several comments had called for a return to the use of parking coupons, but said it was normal to face challenges when transitioning to a new system, citing the Kenyalang Gold Card (KGC) as an example.
“It’s like when we first started to introduce the KGC, you’re facing the same thing. But now everything (for KGC) is going smoothly. These are the things where we need everyone’s cooperation and understanding.”
At the same time, Wee urged those with elderly parents or dependents to assist them in registering for Pay & Go’s Elderly Easy Payment (EEP).
The EEP registration can be done at the MBKS or Kuching North City Hall (DBKU) service counters and has no deadline.
Alternatively, family members of the elderly can help by downloading the Pay & Go app onto their devices and registering their vehicle plate numbers.
In fact, Wee noted that some elderly individuals who sought help at MBKS counters for EEP registration discovered that the app had already been downloaded on their devices without their realising it.
“It will not take you more than five minutes (to register). So do that for your parents,” said Wee. —DayakDaily
