KUCHING, Jan 3: A 12-foot-tall, 28-foot-long Lantern Float, inspired by a red-headed boat, became the highlight of today’s temple parade honouring Lord Xuantian Shangdi or the supreme wealth deity, organised by the Kuching Teochew Association at Main Bazaar.
Adorned with 88 red lanterns, the stunning float symbolised prosperity, unity, and success, reflecting the rich cultural heritage of the Teochew community.
The vibrant procession saw thousands gathered to witness the festivities as 144 participating teams brought the city to life with dragon and lion dances, rhythmic drums, and an overall celebratory atmosphere, infusing the streets with a myriad of colour and culture.
This celebration was officiated by Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian alongside Kuching South City Council (MBKS) Mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng, and other distinguished guests.
The parade kicked off this evening at Main Bazaar, where dragon dance teams, drum troupes, flag bearers, and colourful floats gathered before making their way through the scenic and historical routes of Carpenter Street, Ewe Hai Street, Jalan Tunku Abdul Rahman, Jalan Central, Jalan Padungan, India Street, Gambier Street, Wayang Street, and Jalan Tun Haji Openg, before returning to the Xuantian Shangdi Temple.
A spokesperson for the Kuching Teochew Association announced that following the parade, worshippers will be invited to take home their sponsored lanterns starting Jan 6.
Alongside the Lantern Float, the Community Float and various cultural groups contributed to the celebration, creating a lively atmosphere that underscored Kuching’s vibrant multicultural spirit.
The parade, steeped in tradition and pageantry, was a resounding celebration of Kuching’s diversity and the enduring traditions of the Teochew community.
