KUCHING, June 14: A white pole that has been erected near Fort Margherita in Kuching and is believed to be part of the 99-metre-tall flagpole appears to be complete.
DayakDaily visited the Kuching Waterfront today to observe progress on the site. If the flagpole is completed as it appears to be, this would indicate the Sarawak flag could soon be hoisted to the top of the pole.
Kuching is set to host the nation’s tallest flagpole, which will represent the sovereignty, patriotism, unity, and pride of the Sarawakian people.
In Jan 2023, it was announced that the Sarawak flagpole project would be one of Kuching’s future tourist attractions.
The flagpole is reportedly funded by a private sector organisation and is situated between the Sarawak Legislative Assembly (DUN) complex and Fort Margherita.
Kuching North City Hall (DBKU) is the project’s implementing agency, and KKB Engineering Berhad is the design and construction contractor.
The flagpole and the surrounding area, which reportedly cost RM30 million to construct, was funded as part of the private entity’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiative.
As per the information available on Wikipedia, the current tallest flagpole in Malaysia is located in Dataran Merdeka, Kuala Lumpur.
This flagpole is also currently the tallest in Southeast Asia. Once the Sarawak flagpole is completed, it will stand four metres taller than Malaysia’s current tallest flagpole.
This will make Kuching the new holder of the title for the tallest flagpole in the region. — DayakDaily
