KUCHING, Dec 16: Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) Julau MP Larry Sng says Selangau MP-cum-Works Minister Baru Bian is “the natural choice” as Sarawak PKR chairman.
He reasoned that Baru is the only federal minister from Sarawak; thus, he deserved the post.
“Being the only minister from Sarawak, he is the natural choice to lead the party into the coming state election (due in 2021),” Sng told DayakDaily in a WhatsApp message.
He was responding to the announcement of Baru being re-appointed as Sarawak PKR chief yesterday. The announcement was made after PKR president Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s consultations with PKR division chiefs in Sarawak here on Friday (Dec 14). Out of 29 PKR divisions, 22 voted for Baru.
Sng, who was seen as Baru’s nemesis during the PKR party election, did not challenge Baru for the post. During the party election, Sng supported Rafizi Ramli to be PKR deputy president while Baru was in Economic Affairs Minister Datuk Seri Azmin Ali’s camp.
“I didn’t contest nor offer myself to contest (for the Sarawak chairmanship post),” Sng revealed.
He reckoned he could serve Sarawak well as a member of the Central Leadership Council and as Julau MP.
“I (also) need time to get to know existing party members throughout the country and to strengthen the party at the grassroots.
“I have time on my side, so there is no need to rush,” said Sng.
Sng held the view that Sarawak PKR would be focussing on the state election, where it is expected to win more seats in the Sarawak legislature.
“Expectations are high, and we should win more seats in the august House,” said Sng. — DayakDaily
