KUCHING, July 10: The Rainforest World Music Festival (RWMF) 2025 successfully diverted 1,550 kilogrammes of waste out of a total 3,543.3 kilogrammes generated during its recent three-day event from June 20–22 at the iconic Sarawak Cultural Village, thanks to robust waste management systems and the collective commitment of eco-conscious festival-goers and partners.
Sarawak Tourism Board (STB) chief executive officer (CEO) Sharzede Salleh Askor said that this 31.3 per cent diversion rate reflects the festival’s ongoing dedication to environmental sustainability, even as it welcomed 22,000 attendees this year.
While slightly lower than the 37 per cent diversion achieved during the 2024 edition, which saw 1,712.7 kilogrammes of waste diverted out of 4,581.72 kilogrammes generated, the 2025 outcome affirmed consistent efforts in keeping RWMF green, regardless of scale.
Breakdown of diverted waste includes paper/cardboard (215.7 kg recycled), plastic (410.8 kg recycled), metal (271.0 kg recycled), glass (225.0 kg recycled), used cooking oil (21.9 kg recycled), food Waste (413.6 kg composted), and general waste sent to landfill (1,976.3 kg).

“This outcome is directly in line with the Sarawak Tourism Board’s vision of making RWMF 2025 a truly sustainable and eco-friendly festival in the region,” Sharzede said in a media release today.
She further praised festival-goers for their heightened environmental awareness this year.
“The festival’s success in maintaining a clean and green environment over the three days wouldn’t have been possible without the outstanding support of our attendees. Your responsible use of designated bins was exemplary and deeply appreciated,” she said.
Sharzede also extended appreciation to Trienekens Sarawak for its crucial role in supplying and managing waste segregation bins, which played a key role in reducing landfill impact.
“It was a fantastic demonstration of community and collaboration for a greener festival,” she added.
Held under the theme “Connections: One Earth, One Love,” RWMF 2025 not only celebrated global music and culture but also championed environmental responsibility. The success of its waste management initiative sets a strong benchmark for sustainable event practices across the region.
RWMF looks forward to building on this year’s achievement and reinforcing its role as a leader in green festival management. — DayakDaily
