KUCHING, Jan 1: Heavy rain drenched Kuching Waterfront throughout the night, but it did little to deter thousands who gathered on Wednesday (Dec 31) to usher in the New Year at the Sarawak Countdown 2026 celebration, which ran for hours and culminated in a fireworks display at midnight.
Armed with raincoats and umbrellas, concertgoers remained undeterred by the downpour, singing along, cheering and dancing as performances continued under persistent rain, transforming the waterfront into a vivid display of resilience and festive spirit.

Indonesian singer Judika, who headlined the final concert of 2025, returned to Kuching for his second appearance after performing at the Borneo Sonic Music Festival. His set, featuring hits such as Cinta Karena Cinta, Sampai Kau Jadi Milikku and Ku Sedang Sayang Sayangnya, drew loud sing-alongs even as rain fell steadily over the crowd.
Malaysian pop group KRU, whose high-energy performance sparked waves of nostalgia with favourites including Fanatik, Terhangat Di Pasaran and Remaja Selamanya, prompted cheers from rain-soaked fans gathered near the stage.

Sarawak-born singer Dayang Nurfaizah delivered one of the night’s most emotional moments, receiving a warm homecoming reception. Her soulful performance resonated strongly with the audience, reaffirming her standing as one of the nation’s most respected vocalists.
Performances by Jatt Ali, Naqiu, Meerazada, Carrie Geres, Mawat, Jolly Jengan, Razali, Meruked and Agura Band further lifted the celebratory mood despite the challenging weather.

As the clock struck midnight, fireworks illuminated the Kuching skyline over the Sarawak River, drawing loud cheers from revellers who braved the rain to welcome 2026 together.
The celebration once again underscored Kuching Waterfront’s role as a key venue for major public events, with heavy rain failing to dampen the crowd’s determination and festive spirit. — DayakDaily
