KUCHING, Aug 12: A case involving a rabies infection has been recently detected in Marudi, while one case has been reported at Taman Lovely Lane in Jalan Batu Kawah in Kuching here.
Kuching South City Council (MBKS) mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng said the authorities have taken immediate action by commencing a rabies vaccination drive at Marudi’s market which will take place today and tomorrow from 9am to 4pm.
“This is to minimise and curtail the potential further spread of rabies in the district,” he shared during his ShallWeeTalk live session today.
Regarding the rabies case discovered in Jalan Batu Kawah, Wee explained that this case involved a pet dog which had tested positive for the virus.
Despite the downward trend in rabies cases, he issued a stern warning to the public against underestimating the threat.
He emphasised that rabies remains a genuine concern, underscoring the importance of pet owners ensuring their dogs receive their annual vaccinations without delay.
“We want to urge pet owners to bring their dogs in particular for their annual vaccination if they have not done so.
“We will plan for another round of mass rabies vaccination programme within MBKS jurisdiction by coordinating with the Department of Vetinerary Sarawak (DVS) if their schedule permits. We need to try and conduct two vaccination programmes a year,” he added.
Stressing the gravity of the situation, Wee highlighted the severe risk posed by animal bites, which can result in high fatality rates among humans.
He urged the public to exercise vigilance and adopt preventive measures to safeguard themselves, those around them, and the well-being of their pets.
“While there have been no recent cases reported within the MBKS area, this collective responsibility demands attention in the face of potential rabies transmission,” he said.
The public is encouraged to promptly notify the council about the presence of stray dogs in public areas.
Wee also pledged to explore the integration of neutering programmes into the city’s initiatives against rabies, further enhancing their comprehensive approach to tackling the issue. — DayakDaily
