Putrajaya speeds up work on National Climate Change Bill in line with Sarawak’s carbon policy

KUCHING, Aug 20: The federal government is actively drafting the National Climate Change Bill in line with the initiatives implemented by the Sarawak government, says Minister of Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad.

According to a Sarawak Public Communications Unit (Ukas) news report, he said this is part of the government’s efforts to strengthen policies related to climate change and the carbon market in Malaysia.

“We are conducting a series of engagements with the state governments, and Sarawak has taken the lead in planning a carbon policy.

“We are going to the ground to ensure that the bill can be introduced as soon as possible, in line with the steps taken by Sarawak and meet international requirements under the United Nations Framework Conference on Climate Change (UNFCC),” he said.

He said this after paying a courtesy call on Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg at his office in Wisma Bapa Malaysia here today.

Deputy Minister for Urban Planning, Land Administration, and Environment Sarawak Datuk Len Talif Salleh and Deputy Minister for Energy and Environmental Sustainability Sarawak Datuk Dr Hazland Abang Hipni were also present during the courtesy call.

The National Climate Change Bill is expected to be tabled in Parliament next year. — DayakDaily
