KUCHING, July 20: Kota Sentosa assemblyman Wilfred Yap should also seek justice for Teoh Beng Hock by pushing Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) federal ministers to reopen the case instead of politicising the issue, says Michael Kong Feng Nian.
In a statement, Kong, who is the special assistant to Sarawak Democratic Action Party (DAP) chairman Chong Chieng Jen, was responding to Yap’s sentiments that the party must be held accountable in Teoh’s case.
Teoh was the political aide to Selangor executive councillor Ean Yong Hian Wah, who was found dead on July 16, 2009, while in the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission’s (MACC) custody.
Yap, in his statement, said that DAP leaders brought up Teoh’s name during their campaigns, which he claimed was not solely to demand justice but also to gain an electoral advantage.
In response, Kong said that Teoh died while in the custody of MACC in 2009, which was when SUPP, at that time, through Barisan Nasional (BN) Sarawak, was part of the federal government and questioned what he alleged was their lack of involvement in the issue.
“From the very beginning, DAP has consistently fought for accountability. We formed a legal team for the Teoh family, and our leaders have been involved in pursuing justice through all available legal avenues.
“When the Attorney General’s Chambers (AGC) announced in June 2025 that there would be ‘no further action’ (NFA), DAP condemned the decision and demanded accountability. DAP also expressed its support towards any intended challenge to that NFA decision and publicly called upon the AGC to review the decision.
“Our actions show that our commitment never wavered be it whether we are in opposition, or in government,” said Kong.
He further clarified that DAP carried Teoh’s name not as a political slogan, but as a moral responsibility to remind Malaysians of the dangers of unchecked power and the need for institutional reform.
“If Wilfred Yap truly believes in justice for Teoh Beng Hock, then he should be pushing his GPS federal ministers and deputy prime minister for the case to be reopened and properly prosecuted.” — DayakDaily
