KUCHING, Sept 13: Malaysia’s unique history is a reason for pride and reflection amongst its people, says political pundit Dato Peter Minos.
In a statement, Minos recalled his youth during the formation of Malaysia in 1963, where he shared the excitement he and his classmates felt about becoming part of a new nation.
He also reflected on significant events such as Singapore’s separation, the Indonesia–Malaysia Confrontation, and the May 13 riots, all of which tested the country but saw it recover and move forward.
“For me and many fellow Malaysians, Malaysia has drastically changed our lives for the better. We gained better education, incomes, homes, and more. Without Malaysia, I do not think we would have progressed as much,” he said.
He also said that although differences may emerge from time to time in Malaysia, with goodwill, they can always be resolved.
Minos also referred to issues such as the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63) and PETROS–PETRONAS negotiations, which he believed would eventually be settled peacefully.
“Of course, we have some internal family differences that erupt now and then, but these can be sorted out over time with the goodwill we share.
“What matters most is Malaysia. It must continue to grow and prosper, guided at all times by fairness, equity, and mutual understanding among all,” he said.
Having lived through the nation’s journey since its formation, Minos admitted to feeling nostalgic as Malaysia Day approaches.
“So, for this coming Sept 16, let every Malaysian take time to reflect on this wonderful nation, with its truly interesting and unique history,” he said. — DayakDaily
