KUCHING, Sept 14: The ongoing RM60 million water supply development project on Pulau Bruit in Daro will provide the island with five million litres of water per day (MLD) upon its completion, expected by the end of this year.

Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg assured residents that clean water will be available once the project is completed, effectively addressing the island’s water supply issues.

“Water is a basic necessity for daily life—whether it’s for prayer, marriage, or childbirth, water is essential.

“I am pleased to announce that a project is underway to provide clean water supply to Pulau Bruit by the end of this year.

“This project, costing over RM60 million, will ensure that Pulau Bruit has sufficient water through a pipeline system delivering five million litres of water per day,” he said during his speech at the Pulau Bruit Festival 2024 opening ceremony held today at the Rural Growth Centre (RGC) commercial site in Semop, Daro.

The event was broadcast live via the Sarawak Public Communication Unit’s (Ukas) Facebook page.

The Premier also outlined other infrastructural developments in Pulau Bruit, including the construction of bridges to connect the island to several districts, ending its isolation.

“When I became Chief Minister in 2017, I announced plans to build bridges connecting Batang Lassa and Batang Paloh, so that Pulau Bruit would no longer be isolated.

“Pulau Bruit would be connected to Daro, then to Mukah, and onward to Tanjung Manis, Sibu and Sarikei,” he explained.

Abang Johari emphasised that the bridges will facilitate easier travel, improving access to essential services and economic opportunities.

“It was a long-standing dream of mine, and I am proud that I have secured the funding for these bridges, which are now under construction.

“I do not make empty promises; when I announce something, I ensure it gets done,” he added.

Abang Johari asserted that the construction of the bridges is a testament to Sarawak government’s commitment to improving infrastructure for the people of Pulau Bruit.
