MIRI, Oct 24: The Sarawak United Peoples’ Party (SUPP) Pujut Branch has issued a public warning about scam phone calls in which individuals falsely claim to represent the office of Pujut assemblyman, Adam Yii.

Unauthorised individuals have been impersonating ‘SUPP Pujut 20′ and making contact with members of the public, causing concern in the local community.

The public is strongly advised not to respond to the number +6014-7890471.

Kelvin Hii, in charge of the service center and the Youth Chief of the Sarawak United Peoples’ Party (SUPP) Pujut Branch, emphasised that the mentioned number is not affiliated with the Sarawak United Peoples’ Party or the service center.

Hii urged individuals who receive messages from this number not to respond and to report it to the relevant authorities immediately.

“The service center uses only one hotline, +6019-8863819, for communication with the public. If anyone receives messages from other numbers, it is essential to verify it with our service center,” he said.

Hii revealed that one person who filed a report mentioned that the number had sent them information about participating in an investment project.

“It was only after an investigation that they realised the other party had falsely used the name ‘SUPP Pujut 20′ in their communication, creating the impression that it was the Sarawak United Peoples’ Party’s office reaching out to them,” he explained.

Hii stressed the importance of maintaining vigilance because similar incidents might occur, and unauthorized individuals may use different numbers to contact people.

“It’s crucial to note that changing the name or profile picture of a phone number is relatively easy, so one should not solely rely on the name or picture to trust the identity of the other party,” he added.

Deceptive tactics like these could potentially be employed in various settings, including businesses, individuals, banks, government institutions, and more.

Miri mayor Adam Yii, who is also the Pujut assemblyman, takes this incident very seriously and has strongly condemned any form of deception or identity impersonation.

Yii emphasised that if anyone receives contact from numbers not associated with the service center, they should report it immediately.

The official contact number for the service center is +6019-8863819, and individuals can visit the service center directly at this address: Lot 3486 S/L No 6, 1st Floor, Jalan Piasau, Commercial, 98000 Miri, Sarawak. ā€” DayakDaily
