Benedict, a German theologian whose 2013 resignation took the world by surprise, died on Dec 31, 2022, in a monastery in the Vatican at the age of 95. He led the Catholic Church for less than eight years until his resignation in 2013 due to ailing health.

Chancellor Fr Patrick Heng, in a statement, said the Archdiocese of Kuching joined the world in mourning the passing of Pope Benedict XVI.

“In solidarity with the funeral mass in St Peter’s Basilica, Vatican City in Rome, the Archdiocese will celebrate a memorial mass to be presided by His Grace Archbishop Simon Poh, on Thursday (Jan 5) at 5.30pm at St Joseph’s Cathedral here.

“All are welcome,” he added.
