KUCHING, Aug 11: Parti Rakyat Sarawak (PRS) Youth chief Datuk Snowdan Lawan would vie for the party’s presidency post if he has enough endorsement from the grassroots level.
In a doorstep interview with DayakDaily today, the Balai Ringin assemblyman reiterated his intention to step down from the party’s Youth wing as he was aiming for a higher post in the coming Triennial Delegates Conference (TDC) this October.
When asked which post he was eyeing, Snowdan said he would cross the bridge when he comes to it, placing emphasis on the need to go on the ground to seek grassroots feedback.
“There is no point—let’s say if you want a particular post, but you don’t get enough nominations from the grassroots level, there’s no point. So, to me, it’s better that you go on the ground,” he said.
He said to vie for the post of president, one would need about one-third of endorsement from the division.
Snowdan, who is also the Deputy Minister for Tourism, Creative Industry, and Performing Arts, explained that it was vital to seek feedback so that there won’t be too many people eyeing one position.
“If you have ten people going for one position, there is also no point because there would be too many. It’s just going to spoil the soup,” he said.
Responding to remarks by academician Professor Dr Jayum Jawan, who implied that senior vice president Dato Sri John Sikie Tayai and vice president Dato Sri Aaron Ago Dagang are the most eligible to challenge Datuk Joseph Salang Gandum for the presidency but are ‘weak’ contenders, Snowdan dismissed the claim as mere speculation.
“He (Jayum) is not ‘inside’ (the party)—we are inside. We know what’s happening, he’s only speculating,” he said, adding that anyone could go for the post.
By virtue of his post as Youth chief, Snowdan is also among the seven vice presidents in PRS. — DayakDaily
