KUCHING, Aug 11: With Datuk Snowdan Lawan stepping down as Parti Rakyat Sarawak (PRS) Youth Chief at the upcoming Triennial Delegates Conference (TDC) this October, the Supreme Council has proposed fellow member Christopher Gira Sambang to vie for the post.
In a statement, Gira, who is the assemblyman for Tamin, expressed his readiness to lead the PRS Youth Wing, as he believes the youth will help shape the party into becoming more committed, relevant, and people-oriented, particularly among the younger generation. He also urged more young people to join PRS to strengthen the party.
He also sought the backing and nomination of all PRS Youth divisions across Sarawak for his bid to become Youth chief.
Gira holds a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering from the University of Glasgow, United Kingdom, and is a certified professional engineer. He is also the owner of a civil and structural engineering consultancy company based in Kuching.
Murum assemblyman, Kennedy Chukpai Ugon, also offered himself as a candidate for the Youth chief post.
On Aug 10, it was announced by PRS president Datuk Joseph Salang Gandum that all top office bearers—with the exception of Snowdan—unanimously agreed to defend their current posts in the coming TDC from October 18–19.
Earlier, on April 25, Snowdan announced his intention to step down from his nine-year tenure at the helm of the Youth wing.
He said it would be unfair to remain in the position any longer when others are ready to step up and stressed the need for renewal in the Youth wing. — DayakDaily
