KUCHING, Jan 10: Echoing sentiments from Parti Rakyat Sarawak (PRS) president Datuk Joseph Salang Gandum on top positions, including the presidency, being open for contest in the partyā€™s Triennial Delegates Conference (TDC) this year, Christopher Gira Sambang also reminded members to prioritise stability to ensure continued development.

In a statement today, the PRS Supreme Council member said this reflects the partyā€™s democratic practices, but at the same time, he also said it is the membersā€™ responsibility to ensure harmony within the party so that there is no conflict.

ā€œWe need to understand and realise that the majority of PRS members are Dayaks who live in rural areas and still need development from the government.

ā€œTherefore, it is the responsibility of the party leaders to ensure stability and there is no division for the sake of party strength,ā€ he said.

When asked if he supports any candidate, Gira said he has not decided on anyone yet as he does not know the list of candidates for the time being.

ā€œHowever, party members can analyse and determine who should lead the party for the next term based on the candidate’s track record,ā€ he said.

On January 6, PRS president Datuk Joseph Salang Gandum said that all leadership positions, including the presidency, remain open for contest, but he also highlighted the importance of collective decision-making within the partyā€™s constitutional framework.

Salang also dismissed speculations about the partyā€™s supposedly diminishing significance, emphasising its resilience and grassroots strength.

In response to this, Gira, who is also Tamin assemblyman, said the political scenario is always changing and to remain relevant, it is normal for leadership to change, and along with it, how the party is managed.

To do so, he said party leaders must try to engage with and attract younger members and work hard to ensure PRS aligns with the goals of other Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) component parties and remain relevant.

ā€œAs said by the party president during the launch of the Marudi branch recently, PRS has young leaders who are capable of continuing the partyā€™s fight, bringing it to a higher level,ā€ he said. ā€” DayakDaily
