KUCHING, Aug 29: The establishment of a ‘Dewan Belia’ which functions as a legislative assembly for the youth in Sarawak was proposed during the State-level National Youth Consultation Council (MPBN) meeting today.
Sarawak Minister of Youth, Sports and Entrepreneur Development Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah said the proposed Dewan Belia was inspired by Youth Parliament of Malaysia – a youth council and simulation of the parliamentary proceedings of the Malaysian Parliament for youths aged between 16 and 30.
“Among the proposals presented today was the proposed establishment of a Dewan Belia which resembles the Youth Parliament.
“For Srawak, they proposed for the formation of a State Legislative Assembly (DUN) for the youth – Dewan Undangan Negeri Belia or Dewan Belia,” he told a press conference after chairing the MPBN Sarawak meeting at Merdeka Palace Hotel here.
Abdul Karim further described the proposals presented in the meeting as great ideas coming from about 80 youth leaders present.
“I can see that many of the presented matters are of high quality and not from ‘kopitiam talk’. These are proposals that need to be looked into and scrutinised by the government and relevant bodies.
“These proposals reflect the maturity of the youth leaders who know what are their goals and aspirations that they need to highlight in the present time.
“Now it is left for us (relevant authorities) to look into these proposals and if possible, we will materialise it,” he added. — DayakDaily
