KUCHING, July 29: A property broker in Miri lost RM391,000 to an investment fraud through a mobile group.
According to Deputy Commissioner of Police Sarawak Dato Mancha Ata, the victim, a 70-year-old man, received a message on May 6 through a mobile group application under the name ‘KL Security Investment Communication Group 98’ explaining an investment package with promising returns.
He said the victim was later instructed to contact ‘Bob’, who is the suspected leader of the group using the handle name ‘Stock Exchange PSPlus’.
He also said that the victim was then asked to pay the Inland Revenue Board (LHDN) for the initial 24 per cent profit gain and was later instructed to make an additional payment for the profit tax and investment capital.
“In June, the victim made 11 transactions totalling RM391,000 to four different bank accounts.
“He only realised he was scammed after inquiring about the investment return from the suspect on July 3 but was told to make another payment for the profit tax,” he added. — DayakDaily
