KUCHING, Oct 25: Kuching South City Council (MBKS) Mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng reminds employers, whether in the public or private sector, to make staff well-being and mental health a priority.
In a statement, he pointed out mental health awareness is important for reducing stigma, promoting understanding, and improving access to resources and support services.
Wee said mental health awareness can be incorporated into everyday life through self-care, education, empathy, speaking up, supporting mental health initiatives, prioritising mental health in relationships, and creating a safe space for discussion.
“I believe that mental health illness has to be the top priority in our health system. We can see how the Ministry of Health is trying to create awareness about this illness to the public,” he said.
He made these remarks before a talk titled “Mental Health Made Easy” held in conjunction with World Mental Health Day at MBKS Auditorium here today.
Wee believe that everyone needs to attend this kind of talk to broaden their minds on the importance of mental health to everyone be it youth, adults or senior citizens.
He said that good mental health is vital to overall health and well-being.
“Mental health conditions are also affecting an increasing number of adolescents and young people. Having a mental health condition should never be a reason to deprive a person of their human rights or to exclude them from decisions about their health.”
Wee urge people to always check on their family, friends and neighbours, whether by giving them a call, asking about their day, listening, lend a hand if they need help, showing support for them or seeking help if needed.
He applauded the MBKS management for organising this talk which shows their concern for the staff’s well-being and putting the staff’s welfare first.
“Creating a positive working environment and a good support system within it will lead to a successful organisation,” he said. — DayakDaily
