LUNDU, Oct 8: Swinburne University of Technology Sarawak Campus (Swinburne Sarawak) has been urged to conduct in-depth research into turbine technology, focusing particularly on the production of turbine blades.

Premier of Sarawak Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said turbines are essential components in systems such as aircraft engines and hydroelectric turbines, and understanding their mechanics is key to efficient energy production and propulsion.

ā€œBack then, the propellers were built outside of the aircraft. Today, all the propellers are ā€˜hidingā€™ (built-in). If they are built-in, how do we construct the turbine blades?

ā€œTherefore, I have requested Swinburne Sarawak to conduct a study in terms of turbine (technology),ā€ he said when launching Aviation Academy at Centre for Technology Excellence Sarawak (Centexs) Lundu here today.

Abang Johari further said if Sarawak masters the production of turbine blades, it can significantly contribute to electricity generation and aviation technology.

ā€œBoth hydro turbines and aircraft turbines operate on similar principlesā€”the system is the same,ā€ he added.

Speaking to reporters after the event, Abang Johari explained that turbine blades can be produced with the help of artificial intelligence (AI) and 3D printing.

ā€œThat is why we are planning to establish a basic aerospace degree programme in Sarawak. After completing that, graduates can proceed to post-degree training at Centexs,ā€ he emphasised. ā€” DayakDaily
