KUCHING, Dec 18: Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg has reiterated his call for Sarawak to become the star of ASEAN and position itself as an influencer in the region.

He said Sarawak’s ambition is not merely to excel within Malaysia but to become a leading knowledge-driven economy in ASEAN, powered by education, innovation, and advanced technology.

“Today, young people call it being an influencer. Let Sarawak be the influencer in this region,” he said, adding that bold initiatives such as the Free Tertiary Education Scheme (FTES) for Anak Sarawak are only the first step, starting in 2026.

Addressing the launch of FTES at Raia Hotel and Convention Centre today, Abang Johari highlighted Sarawak’s transition towards clean and renewable energy, including hydrogen, hydroelectric power, solar energy, and carbon trading, stressing that these sectors require strong foundations in science, technology, and data.

“We need people who can command modern science and technology. Let Sarawak students be the ones who add value to our resources,” he said.

The Premier also encouraged Sarawakian students to master multiple languages, ideally Bahasa Malaysia, English, and Mandarin, to compete on the global stage.

“You are not only the sons and daughters of your parents. You are the sons and daughters of Sarawak. Make sure Sarawak will be prosperous,” he urged.

Reflecting on his recent visit to China, Abang Johari said, “I just came back from Suzhou, Jiangsu province, which is the third largest contributor to China’s GDP. We are planning to develop Tanjong Embang with a new international airport and modern port, positioning Sarawak strategically for a modern economy.”

Expressing confidence in the younger generation, he said Sarawak must avoid being trapped in a middle-income economy and instead strive to lead in innovation.

“I hope you will be the people inventing new chips and technology for the world,” he said.
