KUCHING, Oct 29: The Sarawak Sustainability Blueprint, a comprehensive roadmap to guide all sectors towards harmonising economic growth and environmental preservation, has been unveiled at the Sarawak Sustainability Insights 2024 event held at Pullman Hotel here today.
Premier of Sarawak Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said the blueprint focuses on two critical dimensions: Green Transition and Economic Equity, with the aim to establish a robust framework that integrates sustainable practices.
āThis blueprint will not only address current environmental challenges but also proactively anticipate future needs related to climate resilience and green economy.
āBy fostering synergies among sectors, we can enhance our efficiency in resource planning and implementation, ensuring that every effort contributes meaningfully to our sustainability goals,ā he said when officiating the event.
Abang Johari who is also the Minister of Energy and Environmental Sustainability (MEESty), further listed the 10 strategic thrusts under the Blueprint, namely Energy Transition, Sustainable Agriculture and Food Security, Green Mobility, Circular Economy, Sustainable Manufacturing, Sustainable and Responsible Mining, Protection and Enhancement of Natural Assets, Sustainable Cities, Community Development and Eco Tourism.
Under the Energy Transition strategic thrust, he said Sarawak is dedicated to continue harnessing clean energy sources to meet domestic energy demand and for power export.
āFurthermore, energy efficiency (EE) is often referred to as the lowest-hanging fruit in energy management. By adopting such measures, we can āfree upā power without the need to build new power plants, saving significant public funds and meeting the growing power demands.
āIn line with this, the Sarawak government is also preparing a dedicated sub-policy on EE under the Sarawak Energy Transition Policy, laying the foundation for sustainable energy consumption,ā he elaborated.
Also present were Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian, Sarawak Legislative Assembly (DUS) Speaker Tan Sri Datuk Amar Mohamad Asfia Awang Nassar, Minister of Transport (MOTS) Dato Sri Lee Kim Shin, Deputy Minister of Energy and Environmental Sustainability (MEESty) Datuk Dr Hazland Abang Hipni, Deputy Minister of Infrastructure and Port Development (Infrastructure Development) Aidel Lariwoo and Ernst & Young (EY) Oceania Chief Sustainability Officer Mathew Nelson. ā DayakDaily
