KUCHING, June 10: The Sarawak Energy Transition Policy (SET-P), a comprehensive vision to ensure a sustainable, clean and prosperous energy future for Sarawak, has been unveiled at the inaugural Asia Pacific Green Hydrogen Conference and Exhibition 2024 (APGH 2024) held at Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK) here today.

In his keynote address, Premier of Sarawak Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said by embracing the principles of innovation, inclusivity and global best practices, the SET-P envisions a multi-dimensional approach that integrates policy, regulation, technology, infrastructure and community engagement.

“Some refer to this concept as ‘hypernomics’, highlighting the transformative impact of leveraging advanced infrastructure and fostering robust community involvement.

“Hypernomics envisions a synergistic framework where these elements work in harmony, driving down costs and significantly enhancing the efficiency and effectiveness of our energy transition efforts,” he said.

To realise Sarawak’s vision, Abang Johari said his government is focusing on four main sectors, namely power, transportation, industry, and building (which includes residential and commercial).

The policy also relies on several key enablers that will propel Sarawak forward, where it requires robust policy and regulatory support to navigate the transition while ensuring continued economic growth.

In addition, Abang Johari said mobilising resources through public-private partnerships, financing incentives, and strategic alliances is essential for accelerating the transition, and fostering collaboration, innovation, and technology development within Sarawak’s infrastructure is crucial to facilitating the transition smoothly.

“Fourth, investing in education and training to cultivate a skilled workforce capable of driving and sustaining our energy transition is paramount.

“Finally, raising public awareness through education and advocacy initiatives is essential to foster demand and support for our transition initiatives.

“Together, these enablers will chart our course towards a cleaner, more prosperous future for all,” he emphasised.

On top of that, Abang Johari said the Sarawak government will focus on eight types of energies and technologies such as Renewable Energy (RE), Hydrogen, Energy Efficiency, Green Mobility, Synthetic fuels, Bioenergy, Oil & Gas and Carbon Capture, Utilisation and Storage (CCUS).

Also present were Sarawak Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian; Sarawak Legislative Assembly (DUS) Speaker Tan Sri Datuk Amar Mohamad Asfia Awang Nassar; Malaysian Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation, Chang Lih Kang; Sarawak Minister of Food Industry, Commodity and Regional Development (M-FICORD) Dato Sri Dr Stephen Rundi Utom; Sarawak Secretary Datuk Amar Mohamad Abu Bakar Marzuki; Sarawak Deputy Minister of Energy and Environmental Sustainability (MEESty) Datuk Dr Hazland Abang Hipni; and Borneo Business Connect Sdn Bhd chairman Tan Sri Asmat Kamaludin. — DayakDaily
