KUCHING, Sept 23: Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg will be attending a pre-COP (Conference of Parties) 29 in Baku, Azerbaijan, this coming October 2-3.
He said this following his invitation to Singapore two weeks earlier to speak about green energy, highlighting that he has also been invited to discuss green energy in other countries.
“If this is the case, they (foreign countries) will now look at Sarawak as a hub of green energy,” said Abang Johari during the launching of the Borneo Oil and Gas (POG) Supply Base at the Bintulu Port today.
The pre-COP meeting is held a month in advance of the COP meeting for the 2024 United Nations Climate Change Conference (UNCCC), with COP 29 being the 29th UNCCC conference, held in Baku, Azerbaijan, from November 11-22, 2024.
In addition, with Sarawak identified as Malaysia’s satellite launch site, Abang Johari has set his sights on establishing an aerospace industry, which he hopes to launch next month (November 2024) to train local talent in aerospace satellite technology that utilises chips.
“To capture and store data on the satellite, we will need the (avionics) chip. Thank God, we have the chip designer among Sarawakian engineers in terms of the semiconductor academy,” said Abang Johari.
Currently, Samajaya is producing analogue chips, and Abang Johari stated that Sarawak should soon be able to produce compound chips, which will be used in the semiconductor industry, including avionics for the aerospace sector.
“I am confident that Bintulu Port is one of our approaches to expand our economy, not only in terms of supply base but also for importing materials and exporting products,” added Abang Johari.
He noted that the satellite can be used to capture various types of data, including geological information about Earth, which will serve as a foundation for planning activities, including port operations.
“It will provide an advantage for offering bunkering services in our ports (in Sarawak),” he said. — DayakDaily
