KUCHING, Oct 8: Tanjung Embang is set to be developed as a gas hub under Sarawak’s Gas Roadmap, creating greater opportunities to attract investments in the energy sector and related industries.

Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said the development of the gas hub was part of the State government’s efforts to maximise the use of Sarawak’s gas reserves as a key component of its energy mix.

He said gas would complement other energy sources, including hydropower, solar and biomass, to meet growing energy demand and support Sarawak’s economic development.

“We are currently negotiating and making preparations to utilise our gas reserves. We are developing Tanjung Embang, and a key component of this is the establishment of a gas hub there,” he said as reported by Sarawak Public Communication Unit (Ukas).

He was speaking at an appreciation dinner for Sarawak Energy Group chief executive officer Datuk Sharbini Suhaili, who will retire on Oct 31, at a leading hotel here on Wednesday (Oct 7).

Elaborating on the development, Abang Johari said improved road infrastructure, including a newly opened bridge providing better connectivity to Tanjung Embang, would further support the growth of the area.

He said the development of the gas ecosystem was expected to create opportunities for new investments and project proposals in Sarawak.

“The entire area will be developed as a gas hub under the Sarawak Gas Roadmap.

“That is why we view gas as another vital energy source. This will attract investments and investment proposals to Sarawak,” he added.
