BANGKOK, Sept 14: Sarawak is positioning itself for a stronger role in Asia’s evolving energy landscape, with Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg pushing the State’s priorities on energy security, industrial growth, and the transition to low-carbon energy at a regional dialogue.
In a Sarawak Public Communication Unit (Ukas) report, Abang Johari took part in the ‘Bangkok Dialogue 2026: Ministerial and Industry Dialogue’ held in conjunction with Gastech 2026 here today, bringing Sarawak’s perspectives on the future of energy to a platform attended by energy ministers, international energy institutions, industry leaders, and financial sector representatives from across the globe.
During the dialogue, organised by Thailand’s Ministry of Energy, discussions focused on efforts to ensure energy supply, strengthen international cooperation, reduce carbon emissions and enhance the resilience of energy systems in response to changes in the global energy landscape.
The discussions also considered global energy investment, which reached US$3.3 trillion in 2025, while more than 80 per cent of energy demand growth is expected to come from emerging and developing economies.
Key challenges highlighted included the gap between government policies and the industry’s capacity to implement them, as well as approval and permit processes, fiscal uncertainties, contractual risks, and the impact of geopolitical tensions on energy supply chains.
Sarawak’s participation in the international platform also expanded opportunities for cooperation and the exchange of views with major players in the global energy sector, in line with the State’s efforts to develop a resilient, competitive and sustainable energy sector. — DayakDaily
