KUCHING, Nov 24: Sarawak is projecting a budget surplus of RM144 million in 2026, driven by an estimated revenue of RM13.05 billion against an Ordinary Expenditure of RM12.91 billion.

Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said another RM7.3 billion will be appropriated to the Development Fund Account. He added that the additional appropriation is intended to top up the balance carried forward in the Development Fund Account, which will be used to finance the State’s 2026 Development Expenditure amounting to RM9.3 billion.

Presenting the 2026 Sarawak Budget, themed ‘Empowering People, Advancing Prosperity, Building A Resilient Future’, Abang Johari said this financial plan remains strategic and expansionary, built on the success of revenue re-engineering and prudent financial management.

“It empowers us to make bold investments in infrastructure, digital transformation, and sustainable development, while placing the well-being of the rakyat at the heart of our priorities,” he said when tabling the Budget at the Sarawak Legislative Assembly (DUS) Sitting here today.

He also stressed that the true value of this Budget is not defined by its size, but by its purpose.

“This budget reflects our conscious response to global economic uncertainties including commodity price fluctuations and geopolitical tensions that continue to shape fiscal realities worldwide,” he emphasised.

“It is not the quantum of allocation that matters most, it is the impact we seek to deliver.”

For 2026, Operating Expenditure totalling RM5.6 billion has been allocated. This consists of RM1.4 billion for personnel emoluments, RM2.2 billion for supplies and services, RM1.8 billion for grants and fixed payments which include operating grants to statutory bodies and local authorities, public debt servicing, gratuities, pensions and scholarships as well as financial and welfare assistance. Another RM99 million is set aside for asset procurement and RM150 million for other operating expenses.
