KUCHING, May 25: Sarawak is ready to supply electricity to Sabah by the end of the year and is set to play a key role in the ASEAN power grid, says Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.

He said that the State will supply power to Sabah from the Sarawak grid and through Sipitang, adding that they are also in the process of supplying electricity to Brunei.

“For the last six years, we have been supplying power to West Kalimantan in Indonesia. The power we have is not only for Sarawak as we share it.

“In addition, the prime minister (Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim) asked me to study the possibility of supplying power from Sarawak to Sabah, and from Sabah to the Southern Philippines as part of the ASEAN power grid.

“Sarawak will play its part to contribute to the ASEAN power grid,” he said during the ASEAN Women Economic Summit (AWES) 2025 panel session on ‘Leading ASEAN Sustainability and Digitalisation’ held in Kuala Lumpur today.

This followed the Premier’s remarks that Sarawak is working on enhancing power distribution across the State.

Sarawak has targeted to generate 10 gigawatts (GW) of energy production by 2030 and 15 GW by 2035.

However, Abang Johari said that it will not stop there as it aims to go beyond the 15 GW target to be the ‘Battery of ASEAN’ by supplying clean energy and enhancing cross-border interconnectivity. — DayakDaily
