KUCHING, Feb 10: Discussions on the method of constructing the undersea electric cable for the 1,000-megawatt (MW) electricity connection project from Sarawak to Singapore are expected to be finalised in the first quarter of this year.

Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said the discussions will be followed by a conditional agreement between Malaysia and Singapore.

“Currently, we are still discussing the method of constructing this cable. I expect these discussions to be completed in the first quarter of this year, followed by the possibility of signing an agreement between Malaysia and Singapore,” he told reporters after delivering a public lecture at the ISEAS-Yusof Ishak Institute in Singapore today, reported the Sarawak Public Communication Unit (Ukas).

According to Abang Johari, the matter was previously discussed in a bilateral meeting chaired by Malaysian Prime Minister, Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, and Singaporean Prime Minister, Lawrence Wong.

He also emphasised that the installation of the undersea electric cable involves various technical factors, including ordering and installing the cable, as there are only three such submarine cables in the world.

This project is expected to be an important step in regional energy cooperation and strengthen Sarawak’s role as a green energy supplier.

Also present were Sarawak Secretary, Datuk Amar Mohamad Abu Bakar Marzuki; ISEAS-Yusof Ishak Institute director, Choi Shing Kwok; and Sarawak Climate Change Advisor, Dr Angelia Liew San Chuin. — DayakDaily
