KUCHING, Feb 18: Sarawak United Peoples’ Party (SUPP) is still relevant in Sarawak politics, says Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.

Speaking during the SUPP Chinese New Year Celebration held in conjunction with the party’s 65th Anniversary Dinner in Sibu yesterday (Feb 17), Abang Johari said this was proven by the party’s performance during the last State election by winning seats in Sibu.

“Sixty-five years is a long journey. People say there are many challenges and obstacles, but SUPP’s leadership has solved and faced these challenges gracefully and successfully.

“This means that SUPP is still alive. Not just alive but full of spirit.

“They also won the seats in Sibu (Pelawan and Bukit Assek), meaning that the people have realised that SUPP is still relevant in Sarawak politics,” he said.

Apart from that, Abang Johari reiterated that SUPP and Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) are like brothers.

He said SUPP and PBB were the first to form a coalition government in the 1970s, where leaders from both parties worked together.

“Then it was followed by Barisan Nasional (BN). We (Sarawak) were the first ones,” he added. — DayakDaily
