Premier: Sukma 2024 champion or not, Sarawak has surpassed 70-gold target

KUCHING, Aug 23: Sarawak has surpassed its target of achieving 70 gold medals in the 21st Malaysian Games (Sukma), regardless of whether it becomes the overall champion or not.

Premier of Sarawak Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg noted that Sarawak has accumulated 71 gold medals in Sukma so far, ranking first among the participating Malaysian States, Sabah and Brunei Darussalam.

“Tonight, we got 71 gold (medals) – one extra gold (than targeted).

“Although the Federal Territories are closing in behind but at least we met our target of 70 gold medals.

“Whether or not we would win the overall champion title, at least we have achieved 71 golds,” he said during Sarawak Skills’ 30th anniversary gala dinner held at Riverside Majestic Hotel here earlier tonight.

As of press time, Sarawak is still leading the medal tally at 72 gold medals, with the Federal Territories closing in at 69 and Selangor in third with 51.

There are still 44 more gold medals up for grabs on the last day of Sukma tomorrow (Aug 24).

Also present were Sarawak Minister of Education, Innovation and Talent Development (MEITD) Dato Sri Roland Sagah Wee Inn; Deputy Minister for Education, Innovation and Talent Development II (Talent Development) Datuk Francis Harden Hollis; Sarawak Financial Secretary Dato Sri Wan Lizozman Wan Omar; and Sarawak Skills chairman Tan Sri Datuk Amar Abdul Aziz Husain. — DayakDaily
