KUCHING, Nov 11: Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg has described the conferment of The Order of the Rising Sun, Gold and Silver Star by Emperor Naruhito as a great honour not only for himself but also for the people of Sarawak.
He became the only recipient from Borneo Island to receive the prestigious award this year, which was presented by the Emperor of Japan at the Imperial Palace in Tokyo, Japan today.
The award, one of Japan’s highest honours, recognises Abang Johari’s outstanding contributions to strengthening bilateral relations and promoting economic, technological, and cultural cooperation between Sarawak and Japan.
“I humbly express my gratitude for this award. I had the opportunity to meet and speak with the Emperor of Japan, who expressed pride in the strong ties between Malaysia and Japan.
“I also introduced Sarawak to His Majesty, who was already aware of the State’s efforts in developing new economic sectors. This honour is not just mine, it belongs to all Sarawakians who have contributed to the State’s progress and global reputation,” he told Sarawak Public Communications Unit (Ukas) and TVS when interviewed after the ceremony.
Abang Johari added that the international recognition reflected the world’s confidence in Sarawak’s direction under its sustainable development and green economy agenda.
“What is important is that they recognise Sarawak’s progress toward a new economy in this new era. We are among the countries pursuing policies that prioritise environmental sustainability and improved income for the people,” he said.
He also expressed hope that the award would inspire Sarawakians, especially the younger generation, to pursue excellence and innovation on the global stage.
“This shows that if Sarawakians focus on new fields and achieve success, the world will recognise us,” he remarked. — DayakDaily
