KUCHING, Feb 26: The upcoming Sarawak-owned airline, Air Borneo, will require skilled pilots, engineers, and ground handlers to support its operations, says Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.

“Not only do we need pilots to fly the planes, but we also require engineers to maintain aircraft engines and ground handlers to ensure seamless airport operations using state-of-the-art digital technology.

“This means that with just a simple tap (‘ketek saja’), all check-in processes will be completed. This is what we call state-of-the-art technology, driven by digitalisation and innovation,” he said during the Centre for Technology Excellence Sarawak’s (CENTEXS) 9th convocation ceremony at the institution today.

Air Borneo is Sarawak’s soon-to-be-launched State-owned airline, formed through the rebranding of MASwings after its official acquisition by the Sarawak government on Feb 12, 2025.

The idea of Air Borneo was born out of Sarawak’s long-standing need for better air connectivity and a desire for greater control over its aviation sector.

Abang Johari stated that the airline will serve as a crucial link between Sarawak and major destinations in Asia.

“Initially, Air Borneo will operate flights to Kuala Lumpur, Singapore, and Jakarta. Over time, the airline will gradually expand its reach to Japan, South Korea, and Hong Kong,” he added.

Elaborating further, he said the expansion of Air Borneo’s routes is expected to boost tourism and education, allowing more visitors to experience Sarawak’s unique culture, heritage, and natural attractions.

“Educationally, some people are traveling to Niah to study the history of civilisation there.

“In other words, people are coming to enrich their knowledge while also strengthening the bond of friendship between Sarawak and the rest of the world,” he emphasised. – DayakDaily
