KUCHING, Dec 30: Despite being listed among the top 10 states in Malaysia with significant mineral reserves, Sarawak is in no hurry to exploit its resources, says Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.

Speaking to the media, Abang Johari acknowledged Sarawakā€™s reserves of rare earth elements (RE) but noted that larger deposits are found in northern Malaysia, including Kedah, Terengganu, and Perlis.

ā€œIn Sarawak, we also have other mining prospects so we prefer prioritising other industries first especially when mining requires thorough studies due to its potential environmental impact.

ā€œWhy should we venture into this industry when we already have other sustainable and clean industries? Thatā€™s my view,ā€ he said when met after the groundbreaking ceremony of Che Hia Khor Moral Uplifting Society Sarawak (CHKMUS) Kidney Foundation Medical and Commercial Building at Jalan Laksamana Cheng Ho here today.

Abang Johari further said that Sarawak has the advantage of diverse income streams and is not under pressure to exploit its mineral resources.

ā€œWe are not desperate. We have other sources of income.

ā€œLet the minerals remain untouched for nowā€”just keep them as they are,ā€ he added. ā€” DayakDaily
